The primary culprit is browser WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication). WebRTC bypasses standard browser proxy settings to discover direct peer-to-peer connection paths via public STUN servers. If unpatched, web scripts can extract your underlying physical IP directly from your local network card.
1. How WebRTC Circumvents Your Operating System Proxy
Standard HTTP and SOCKS5 proxies operate at the application layer. When your browser requests a webpage, it asks your proxy server to make the connection on its behalf:
[Standard Web Browsing (Protected by Proxy)]
Browser -> Proxy Client -> Encrypted Tunnel -> Remote Exit IP -> Target Server
(Target server only sees your remote proxy exit IP)
[WebRTC STUN Discovery (Bypasses Proxy)]
Browser WebRTC Engine -> Directly Queries Network Interface Hardware
↓
Sends Raw Out-of-Band UDP Packets (Bypasses Local OS Proxy Settings)
↓
Public STUN Server (e.g., stun.l.google.com:19302)
↓
STUN Reply exposes your ISP Public IP address in ICE candidate payloads!
↓
JavaScript extracts your real IP and sends it to anti-fraud systems!
This vulnerability affects online banking security, cross-border e-commerce merchant accounts, and any privacy-sensitive workflows.
2. Step-by-Step Browser Hardening Instructions
Google Chrome & Microsoft Edge Hardening
Chromium-based browsers do not offer a native toggle in basic settings to disable WebRTC entirely:
- Visit the Chrome Web Store or Edge Add-ons marketplace;
- Install an open-source, community-audited extension such as WebRTC Control or WebRTC Leak Prevent;
- Toggle the extension state to Disable WebRTC.
This drops all RTCPeerConnection API calls made by client scripts.
Mozilla Firefox Native Hardening (Most Secure)
Firefox allows complete kernel-level deactivation of the WebRTC subsystem without external plugins:
- Type
about:configinto your Firefox address bar and hit Enter; - Click “Accept the Risk and Continue”;
- Search for the parameter:
media.peerconnection.enabled; - Double-click the entry to flip its value from
truetofalse.
Firefox is now immune to WebRTC packet leaks.
Operating System TUN Mode Redirection
If you manage complex CLI tools, games, or specialized development frameworks:
Enable TUN Virtual Adapter Mode in your proxy client (such as Clash Verge Rev or Sing-box).
A TUN device operates at the network interface layer (Layer 3), intercepting all UDP packets destined for STUN port 3478 and routing them through your proxy backend.
After applying the fix, run an immediate audit using our IP Connection & Privacy Diagnostic Tool. Ensure the WebRTC test card reports “No Leak Detected” and that your public routing matches our IP Lookup Tool output.
3. Practical Trade-offs
Disabling WebRTC has zero impact on 99% of web browsing, YouTube streaming, or file downloading. The only scenario where you might need WebRTC is when participating in browser-based peer-to-peer web calls (such as Google Meet or Discord Web). For dedicated desktop calls, native desktop apps handle their own routing.
